Biography
Born in Hastings, Hilary learnt how to draw at the Brassey Institute. She did her foundation year at Kingston School of Art and gained a first class honours degree in Expressive Art at the University of Brighton.
Her figurative style displays her love of draughtsmanship coupled with the poetic beauty of light and colour that is evident in the countryside that surrounds her home. She has taught drawing and painting on Foundation courses in universities and colleges across Sussex whilst raising her four children. Always continuing to paint, she has exhibited regularly both in solo shows and selected group exhibitions. These have included Brighton Open House, Artwave Festival, Star Gallery Lewes, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Towner Eastbourne and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
Artist’s Statement
‘I have been painting ever since I can remember. The picture on this page is one of me aged two-and-a-half standing at an easel. I use any medium that seems appropriate to my subject matter, which ranges from the human figure to interiors and landscape. I often use watercolours for sketching en plein air: easy to transport, wonderfully fluid and luminous, they are excellent for capturing quick fresh atmospheric sketches. I tend to use oils or acylics in the studio following on from the sketches, gradually building up layers of colour. I also love charcoal and find it a very painterly, responsive drawing medium. Although mainly figurative my work has abstract qualities, as I am drawn to balancing these two aspects; my intention is always to transmit feeling.’
